All the new chips use Intel’s 14nm manufacturing technology, instead of the 10nm process used in Intel’s Ice lakes chips launched earlier this year. This means the new chips will not be as good as the ones made out of the latter.

Intel’s 10th gen Comet Lake processors come in two variants: Comet Lake-U and Comet Lake-Y. Comet Lake-U series is the most powerful of the duo with configurations up to 6 cores and supports LPDDR4X RAM.

Comet lake processors are expected to power machines as early as next month. Because Ice Lake processors offer more battery optimization and speed, they will be used in more expensive laptops.

If we get into the nitty-gritty details about the naming, it will even get more confusing. However, Intel provided a short infographic to help crack the code.

10th Gen Comet Lake

The new chips will have support fast LPDDR4x memory chips in laptops, the best for multitasking. Also, Intel has integrated the new 10th gen chips with “best-in-class platform connectivity via Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+) and Thunderbolt 3.”

  • Up to 4.9 GHz max turbo frequency
  • Up to 12MB Intel Smart Cache
  • Configurable up to 25W for maximum performance (U-series)
  • Configurable down to 4.5W for 4-core fanless designs (Y-series)
  • Up to 1.15 GHz graphics frequency
  • LPDDR4x, LPDDR3, DDR4 memory speed increase to 2666 MT/s

Availability

The new chips as intel states, will be available before the holiday season. Intel’s 10th gen chips will power Ultrabooks and 2-in-1 laptops.
